During the 19th and 20th centuries, a powerhouse of Black American leaders emerged, consisting primarily of men and women with “an apparent mix of Caucasoid features.” The face of the African warrior, brought to America centuries prior from the Ivory Coast had changed, due to perpetual miscegenation (race-mixing) and the application of the One-Drop Rule, a racial marker exclusive to the United States, in which a person was considered Black if he or she had any African ancestry.
No other country in the world has historically defined race in the same manner. Accepted socially and legally since slavery, this “rule,” as well as its strict enforcement, created a dynamic leadership pool of Light, Bright and Damn Near White revolutionaries, embraced by the Black community as some of its most vocal and active leaders.
This book features these unsung Black heroes and heroines (covering the Slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and Civil Rights eras). Some born slaves and some born free, these men and women were on the forefront of civil rights, innovation, and social reform. Their personal contributions are woven within the very fabric of American culture and policy.
The continued acceptance of the One-Drop Rule is apparent, in America’s embracing of Barack Obama as the first Black President of the United States, and not the first bi-racial president, despite his mother’s race (White).
This informative book is about history . . . American History and African-American History.

Wonderful, well researched book highlighting the lives and histories of 25 African Americans spanning the years of 1813 to 1976 whose achievements were despite race. More impressive was reading about the difficulty of being but not looking black. Loads of background in the introduction and nicely laid out and organized. Even better was the fact that as a history book it is very well written, easy to read--and makes for a fabulous series of stories with a central theme. Wow! Thanks so much to Michelle Gordon Jackson!Product details

Light Bright and Damn Near White Black Leaders Created by the OneDrop Rule eBook Michelle Gordon Jackson Adam Clayton Powell IV Reviews
Love, love this book. Interesting tome about blacks of a lighter hue, who were nonetheless, on the front line of achievements. Nice weekend read.
I loved everything about this book! I would recommend it to everyone and all educational institutions! Michelle Gordon Jackson is an accomplished author!!!
As a person caught in the "color grid" of passing, this book is a fantastic compilation of history and encouragement
This book is well written and the author backs up her statements with evidence. The book is enlightening and moves along swiftly. I would recommend this book highly to students of history. I would also recommend to those who like to know unusual occurrences in Black History.
This book covers a little known but important segment of American history. I knew about many of these people . But the well- documented details in this book fleshed them out and put them into perspective . Walter White of the NAACP and Adam Powell were brave and resilient . My family has many people in this category. Some took the easy way and "passed for white .
Giving it to a white friend to read.
This is a fascinating look at an aspect of American history — the South's "One Drop Rule" — that is rarely studied. It shows the devastating effects of this country's obsession with racial classification from its earliest days, and some of the forgotten figures who challenged social norms. As other reviewers have noted, the style is readable and accessible, in contrast to standard biographies that stuff every paragraphs with names, dates, and quotes. Thank you, MIchelle Gordon Jackson, for this eye-opening book!
I found "Light, Bright and Damn Near White", to be a well written interesting book. I admired many of the people who could have passed for being completly white and make their lives easier, but instead choose to embrace their African American side Many of them helped their people therefore, making valuable contributions to a better society. The evils of slavery were also addressed in this book. I felt I learned a lot about history and people who made a difference.
